The Western United States is setting records in weather this year. According to meteorologists across the country, the area is experiencing the most severe drought in these modern times. Walt Chantry discusses this weather history update: 

The dry summer season is on its way out in the western part of the nation.  A far larger margin than any other spike experienced in the past 20 years, the severity of an impending drought could be the west’s worst yet.  Not just in the past 20 years, but in thousands of years of weather records… 

As of today, a whopping 60 percent of Western states are labeled “severe, “extreme” or “exceptional” in the U.S. Drought Monitor’s ranking system.  Meteorologists are attributing the severity of the drought to two factors: 1. extensive human-caused effects on climate and 2. a recent La Nina impact which failed to properly moisturize the area with cool Equatorial Pacific waters.
