Maps are incredibly powerful resources. We often utilize these tools to get where we’re going — or find out where we are. But a centuries old map that was recently unearthed in Wake County is warming a spotlight on a history that has been forgotten…
Maps certainly tell stories, in more ways than one! But in Wake County, a marvelous discovery has shown that there’s even more to a map than what we see! This month, a map was discovered in North Carolina which dates back to the 1800s. The area depicted in the map is far from what stands today. Naturally, over the 200+ year period, many streets and other locations have been removed from the Wake County area entirely.
This newly discovered relic paints a picture of a different world — a hidden history of sorts, is what Amateur Historians like Walt Chantry are calling it! This map discovery has even gotten Chantry to dive deeper into the reality of hidden history and forgotten times. Imagine the lessons and stories that could be told if only we took the time to carefully examine outdated maps!
